History of the Mullingar St Patrick's Day Parade
When the St Patrick’s Day Parade takes place in 2025, participants will be following in the footsteps of Ireland’s patron saint himself. According to tradition, St Patrick journeyed through the Midlands in 433 AD, travelling from the royal seat at Tara to the Hill of Uisneach, a place long regarded as the sacred centre of Ancient Ireland.
His path took him along an early roadway that mirrored the route of today’s N52, crossing the River Brosna at the site where Mullingar would later emerge. The road passed through what are now Pearse Street, Oliver Plunkett Street, Dominick Street, and Patrick Street, before continuing southwest towards Uisneach.
While the modern parade is a celebration of Irish culture, heritage, and community, it also serves as a tribute to history—a vibrant echo of a journey taken nearly 1,600 years ago. Over the decades, the Mullingar St Patrick’s Day Parade has grown into a much-anticipated annual event, bringing together local businesses, schools, community groups, and performers to showcase the spirit and talent of the town.
2025 Theme: Mullingar’s Sporting Heritage
This year’s parade theme, “Mullingar’s Sporting Heritage”, pays tribute to the town’s rich sporting traditions. Mullingar has long been home to exceptional athletes, dedicated sports clubs, and passionate supporters across a variety of disciplines, from GAA and soccer to horse racing, golf, and water sports. The 2025 parade will honour past and present sporting achievements, celebrating the dedication, skill, and community spirit that have shaped Mullingar’s sporting legacy.
Whether marching in the procession or cheering from the sidelines, everyone taking part in Mullingar’s St Patrick’s Day Parade is sharing in a tradition that spans centuries—one that connects the town not only to its patron saint’s legendary footsteps but also to the enduring pride and celebration of Irish identity.
